Book chat

Here is a blog post that i wrote about the book
types that I like and my favourite book chat books,
enjoy!:

book genres that I enjoy:

some of the book genres that I enjoy are adventure fiction, horror, fantasy and mystery. I enjoy these because they usually have lots of suspense and make you want to read them for hours. They also have lots and lots of fun and exciting scenes that accur in the books.

my favourite book chat book so far in 2019:

we have only had two book chat books so far which have been (for me) Goldfish boy and The magicians Elephant. I probably enjoyed the magicians elephant more than goldfish boy because it has a really good story line and also it isn’t too long so I can also read other book after.

What book genres do you enjoy? Can you write me a 10 book list of your favourite books? If not do 5.

Out Of My Mind / Sharon Draper

‘Out of my mind’ by Sharon Draper is a gripping page turner about melody an 11 year old 5th grader with cerebral palsy a physical disability taking away the ability to walk, talk and move your arms and legs when you want but doesn’t take away the ability to learn. Melody is a completely fictional character but the book is loosely based on Sharon’s daughter who had some difficulties of her own. This book follows melody through her life and her experiences at school with melody making friends but also some other negative relationships that give her a hard time. On the outside you may not think that melody is very smart and knowledgable but on the inside she is as smart as Eienstein. Being smart it makes it very stressful to be in a ‘not normal’ ‘helping’ class with other children who have disabilities but she does get to go to some ‘normal’ classes that they call inclusion class. Melody is very bright and happy in this book but has her difficulties trying to make the quiz team. Will she make it?

In ‘out of my mind’ Sharon Draper uses lots of amazing techniques including figurative language. One of the examples in the book is at the very first page where it says ‘words, I’m surrounded by thousands of them maybe even millions… words have always swirled around me like snowflakes each one delicate and different, each one melting untouched in my hands. this was using similes because it used the word like in the snowflake example. Sharon Draper also uses a very smart technique when she leaves lots of clues around the book leading up to the end. I won’t tell you the example because it will spoil the book but if you read this book make sure you read it very carefully!

Some of the themes that go around this book include don’t judge a book by its covers. This one is great and melody is about the best example for it that you can find because she has cerebral palsy on the outside but that is only a physical disability because she is probably the smartest and most knowledgeable character in this book so don’t judge someone by how they look. Another one is ability vs disability. This means that you should look at what she can do known as her abilities and not what she can’t do yet known as her disabilities. You shouldn’t just look at the negative but look at the positive. In this book her abilities are being funny, smart, kind and so creative.

In this book the relationships with melody and others are so important especially later in the book and here are some. First is the obvious which is the family. This includes penny, the mum and the dad. The dad didn’t appear much in the book but the mum always stood up for melody when some of her teachers weren’t helping melody as well as possible including Mrs billups. Penny has also been very nice to melody because there are probably 200 times where penny says didi (what she calls melody) if you where in Melody’s situation wouldn’t you just smiled your little sister said this? Then her friends and ‘enemies’. Rose one of Melody’s friends in the book is very nice to her because even if she might want to be ‘popular’ and ‘cool’ she also plays with melody when others won’t. One of the examples would be when she goes to the aquarium with her. Then her dog butterscotch. Butterscotch has really cheered melody up a lot when she is sad and helped her get through her sad times. Then the teachers. Melody has had lots of teachers. Mrs billups hasn’t had the best relationship with melody and Melody’s family because she never really listened to the notes that were wrote about her and didn’t teach her well. Then there is someone like Mrs Shannon. Mrs shannon is the opposite To Mrs billups because she did read the notes and help melody. There is also one other teacher but it will spoil about half of the book so I won’t mention him.

‘Out of my mind’ bu Sharon Draper is a massive page turner and a very gripping book that makes you feel like your on an emotional rollercoaster with the sad, funny, happy and exciting times. Be prepared to cry, laugh and get really excited also be prepared to go to bed a lot later because you will NOT be able to put this amazing book down. I recommend this book for ages anywhere from 11 to 999 because there are some things that are quite deep and you need to understand. I hope you enjoyed this and read ‘out of my mind’ by Sharon Draper soon

Out of my mind book

New year, new class.

My first term in year 5 has gone past like the speed of light. There have been so many fun and exciting experiences that have been really enjoyable. Here is a few of those exciting times throughout term 1 year 5:

Maths:

Maths has been really fun this term because we have been focusing on multiplication and division. I have really enjoyed these because I have learnt a new skill. The skill is multiplying and dividing fractions. I now feel really confident with this and will always remember this skill. In maths extension this term on of the things that we did was a rubik’s cube type puzzle. We had these coloured blocks and had to build a 3x3x3 cube with non of the same colour on each face of the cube. This was a massive challenge but I ended up getting the answer.

APS:

APS is new this year because we start it in year 5. We usually would get to put down preferences down for what sport we do but this term we were training for a triathlon. We did swimming, rock climbing and biking even though we run instead of climb in the race. I really joyed biking because we got to go up hills, go through trees and I jumped over a log on my bike. I also really enjoyed rock climbing because it was a challenge but the feeling of achievement that you get when you climb to the top is just amazing. In APS we had to use courage because some of these activities we have never done and we might be pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. We also needed to use resilience to push through the times when something might be very challenging like in rick climbing. One of the main areas of the PLA’s that we had to use was team work because there was a lot of times where we were in a group and had to work as a team. In swimming my group also did 12 laps of 25m. That is 300m! I did 3 laps of breaststroke and 9 laps of freestyle. It was tiring!

Classes:

This year I have a new teacher and his name is Mr. Benwell. He is my first male teacher! There is also 40 new children in the year which means 10 in each class. We also have lots of the previous children ta this school. Mr. Benwell is also an AFL goal umpire so I can see him on TV every once in a while. Mr. Benwell is a really great teacher and I am so lucky to have an amazing class.

House:

This year I have a year 1 buddy like all of the other year 5 students. So far we have only done the swimming carnival and our house came last :(. This was a bit disappointing but I had a really great time. Next we will have cross country and then the athletics day. We have to run about 3k for cross country!

Music lessons:

This year I have joined a guitar group called the Spanish guitars. We have already performed a piece called Russian dance and are learning to more pieces, one called the Grassy Turf and the other Austairius (I don’t know how to spell it) which we will be performing with a mandolin group at a festival.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my post about my term in year 5 and have learnt a bit more.

What year are you in and what is your favourite subject?

Homework shouldn’t be done every night

This is one of the persuasive pieces that i wrote and it is about homework, here it is:

Without a doubt homework doesn’t help everyone in a significant way so why do we waste every night doing it for hours upon hours. Don’t keep wasting our time with homework but use our time with something useful.

Obviously you not need to be anti-social for having to Do homework for longer than nessesary. 3 to 4 days for 1 hours a day is surely enough time to finish homework. Also imagine if you were stuck in your room doing homework not being able to play with your friends and be social, that’s just cruel.

Undoubtably homework is just extending and completing other school work so use your time wisely in school and don’t make more homework. 7 hours of school for 5 days is 35 hours of school a week so you don’t need to make it 60 with home work. This would be way too much time wasted that could be used better.

without a doubt homework doesn’t help everyone in a significant way so why do we waste every night doing it for hours upon hours. Don’t keep wasting our time with homework but use our time for something useful.

It’s absolutely absurd to make us poor kids suffer from more homework. How can we build connections, excersiseto become fit and healthy and socialise when we have mountains of homework that is use everynight? Teachers, get your head in the game and use our time in school not home. Let’s make a change and ensure we aren’t drowning in homework everynight.

What do you believe about this argument? Do you agree or disagree? Tell me in the comments.

The Nativity

Do you love Christmas? Well I do and this term we wrote, made and performed the nativity play.

When we were making our nativity play we first had to read lots of books and watch a few clips of the nativity so we could get an idea of what the nativity story looked like. Then we were split into 12 groups of 2 to write one scene each so there was 12 scenes in the end. Then we had to pic which characters we wanted to be. To decide who would get the role we all wrote down the top 3 characters that we wanted and then we had to audition for the roles. After I auditioned for the wise men, Gabriel and Joseph I got Joseph along with Kobe. Then we took our script home and we had to memorise all of our lines. We also had to go home and look through all of our cupboards to find a costume to wear. I found my mums dress, my mums cardigan, my sisters Nike slides, my dads belt and my mums pillow cover. By the date Friday 23 November we are up to the stage of memorising our lines and making our props and costumes. Next week we will perform it to a nursing home that we go to once a term and parents and year 3’s will watch us doing a dress rehearsal. We only have 11 days left of school and 5 days till we perform (of the day Friday 23 November). MERRY CHRISTMAS

If you could be any person from the nativity who would it be?

Here are some examples:

•Mary

•Joseph

•King herald

•Augustus caesar

•Elizabeth

•Wise men

•Shepherds

•In keepers

•Narrators

•Gabriel

•Angel

•Jesus

•guards

Convict Day Recount

“William Brice,” Magistrate Mitchell called out. I nervously walked up to the front of the room as another William Brice joined me. 19 June, Metcalf hall, Australia. We have a day called Convict Day because year 4 have been learning about the first fleet and early explorers.                      “So there are two of you are there?” asked Magistrate Mitchell.                    “Yes,” I answered tentatively.                                                                                      “Say sir!” Magistrate Mitchell shouted.                                                                “Yes sir,” I replied.                                                                                                         Magistrate Mitchell talked with us for a while about our crimes and what we stole. When I said I stole a looking glass he asked me if I liked to look but I repilied ‘no.’ He than told us that we would be transported for 7 years to Batany Bay where there would be no looking glasses. “7 years it is!” Magistrate Mitchell shouted confidently as he banged his hammer in the table.

how would you feel if you got sentenced to 7 years of transportation to an unknown land?

Amal Unbound Art

We have been reading a story called ‘Amal Unbound’. (She lives in Pakistan) It’s about a young girl that loves reading and wants to become a teacher when she’s older. Then she has an unexpected encounter with the landlord. We are up to the part when she has been taken to the landlord’s house to be a servant and has finally made some friends at the home. I won’t tell you anymore so you can have some surprises if you read the book.

The cover of the book has many symbols on it which represent Amal’s experiences, hopes and dreams. We created our own front cover with symbols that represent ourselves.

On the right hand the two soccer jerseys mean I am afraid of some of my favourite players retiring. On the left hand the maths symbols mean I love maths, the musical notes mean I love playing instruments, the dog means I have a dog and I love him, the controller and ‘fortnite’ represents that I like gaming and especially the game fortnite. All the people mean that I love my family, the soccer net and soccer ball mean I really enjoy playing soccer (as a goalie). The lips on the right hand mean that I am afraid of not being able to talk because I am very good at it, hahaha. The rainbow and the sun represent my happiness.

If you were creating your own, what is a symbol that you would include and what does it represent?
