Gold Rush Diorama Map

This term in integrated we have been focusing about the Gold rush and Eureka stockade. After we came back from Sovereign Hill we made dioramas of our buildings. In math we have now made a map of the birds eye view of the Gold Rush.

We used a compass, grid references, key/legend and size. Here is a photo of my hand drawn map:

Can you direct me from the school (A1) to the eureka flag?

Book Week Voting.

For the last few weeks in library we’ve been focusing on the short listed books. We have been reading them and then judging them by the following criteria; layout, images and information.

A good non fiction book includes:

Pictures, every non fiction book needs these to make the reader interested.

Eye catching and purposeful layout. This is very important because you can’t just put words and images on a page and call it a book. You need to lay them out over the page purposely to help the reader find the information easily.

Humour, humour helps interest the reader and really make them enjoy the topic that you’re writing about.

My favourite and highest scored book was Make Believe it almost got a perfect score except there is always room for improvement! The book had lots of images of illusions. I really enjoyed reading this because there was always something fun to do on each page. I really enjoyed the images for this reason. The layout was incredible. It was really organised with pictures and text. I always knew which text went with each picture for this reason. The book included different sized font for different headings and main text. The information was really good as well. The winner was Sorry Day and the two runner ups were Make Believe and The Happiness Box. I really enjoyed reading lots of new texts that I’ve never read and been able to judge them.

If you judged these books which one had the highest score for you? If not what is your favourite non-fiction topic or book?

Sovereign Hill Camp

In term 3 we are focusing on the 1850s Ballarat gold rush, this was one of the reasons that our camp destination for this term was. Dun, dun, dunnnnn… Sovereign Hill. Sovereign Hill is one of the closest experiences to the gold rush, they have replicas of all of the shops and buildings including the confectioners store, the gold office, the blacksmith and so many more. They also have a school that we actually attended. Here is some of my experiences that I had on the camp.

Sovereign Hill can teach you so much, even if you think you know everything about the gold rush and eureka stockade I’m sure that you’ll learn something else from Sovereign Hill. I have learnt and enjoyed so much about this camp. I’ve learnt lots from school including the toys that they used and how to write in copperplate handwriting. The toys that they used in the 1850s surprised me especially because they separated the toys into boys toys and girls toys. Some of the that us included skipping ropes, cup and ball, quotes with horse shoes, button toy and badminton with either a wooden bat or a bone bat straight from the butcher. I personally really enjoyed the badminton style game because it was really fun to play a familiar game in a different way.

I also learnt in school about copperplate writing. We learnt that you need to learn how to draw a pot hook which is like a ‘S’ but on a slant. This was fun and challenging. We all changed our clothes when going to school because our modern day clothes didn’t fit the time. (1850s) we wore knickerbockers which sound funny but are definitely not funny when you have to wear them. Because it was freezing over at Ballarat and the knickerbocker pants are only 3 quarter long it is freezing. We also wore some baggy shirts which came in various colours. Then we wore a hat, a blazer (jacket) and a tie that was like a bandana. This made the experience very fun and realistic.

School

We got to see the gold getting smashed out of quartz and then made into a golden bare. The gold got to over 1000 degrees Celsius hot. After this the man poured the liquid gold into a container and he had to be quick because even if it was so hot gold goes very solid very fast. Then he took solid gold out of the container and into water which amazingly made it cold enough for him to pick it up with in seconds.

I felt lots of emotions at different moments in this trip from frightened to amazed here are some of those experiences. I was more excited than scared for the mine tours that we went on but I still had some fear. One of those experiences was when we went on a 45 minute long tour in a mine that was around 1 kilometre deep. For a whole minute or 2 we were in complete darkness, no light what so ever, even if you had your eyes completely open. This was kind of scary but I really enjoyed this then we went on the tour and it was really good. Another emotion that I felt was amazement. This was when we saw the Aura show. The Aura show first explained in a 3D movie of how gold was created. Then we saw a holographic type of show outside. After that we saw a short movie inside about the gold rush and eureka stockade but then… 3, 2, 1… the screen splits in half and we can see outside, the coldness of the air outside froze everybody but when the screens split we could see what was like gold rush diggings. Eureka hotel, bar, shops and tents. The show showed us the eureka stockade in action and how the Bentley’s hotel burned. Amazingly there weren’t a single actor! There was only screens on buildings that showed people on them that could move around each screen.

At Sovereign Hill we got to buy some things. Some of the things that I got were for my family members and when I gave them the gifts they were so happy and that made me very happy to see them liking the presents that I’d got for them.

A PLA that was used a lot was courage. We used these in school when the inspector took a visit to our school. He was checking out how clean things were and how up to standard our work was. He expected the grade 2’s (these year levels were by height but we’re all really in year 5 (in our normal school)).to know their 12 times tables and the year 3s, 4s and 5s to know their 17 times tables. I was in year 4 so I had to know my 17 times tables. The year 2s did very well and were very fluent and same were the year 3, 4 and 5s but we mucked up a little bit at the end. The inspector was impressed but then he needed to see the boys copying books and the girls sewing. Some of the boys work was a bit smudged because the nip quills were very hard to use. Ma’am used the excuse the a bird had come inside and sat on their work which wasn’t true but the inspector believed it. Then the best part came. The inspector used to have a horse and went to Master. Leo’s dad to get new horse shoes on the horse. Master. Leo’s dad is hard of hearing and to get your horse four new shoes you can say ‘can I get my horse shod. Now because Master Leo’s dad is hard of hearing he heard ‘can I get my horse shot’. So he killed the horse. Then the inspector asked Leo if he’d had lots of meat that night and Leo answered ‘yes’. This was so hilarious but it was so amazing because Master Leo kept a straight face the whole time somehow.

To enhance the Sovereign Hill camp I would’ve loved to have one more day at school. We had only 2 days to learn everything but if we had one more day it would’ve been more fun and easier. I also would’ve loved to try some of the professions that the shop keepers had. This would’ve been so fun and we would really have understood what the shop owners did.

Have you been to Sovereign Hill? Do you know anything about the gold rush or Eureka stockade?

Carey Celebrates Literature

For the Carey Celebrates Literature the year 5 students had a visit by Mark Wilson. Mark is a very good author and exceptional illustrator. Most of his books involve history because that is what he is passionate about. My favourite part about the festival was having my whole lunch to spend time with my buddy. This was really fun because we only get to see them at house every two weeks or if we see them at play time. My buddy and I really enjoyed playing at the Specky Magee football game. We got to kick, handball and mark but most importantly have lots of fun. Something I learnt from Mark was that instead of just starting an illustration you should always start with some warmup drawings. He taught us how to do this and I was really fun.

What is your favourite book? Do you know any books by Mark Wilson?

House reading

My buddies and I in house read a book called ‘Pets’. Though it was actually a magazine. We played a game where we gave each other 30 seconds to guess the seven small animals that were on the page called ‘seven small animals’. One of my buddies got 1/7 and my other buddy got 3/7.

What is your favourite book?

Neon Update Year 5 Market

This blog post is going to be about how my year 5 market group are going.

My group is called ‘Neon Gang’, in the group are me, Grace, Tom, Mia and Ned.

So far we have made our chip packet keychains, painted rocks, water colour bookmarks and stress balls. We have also got all of the equipment that we need for our ‘shoot for loot’ basketball game. We don’t need to make anymore items but we still need to make some discount cards for our products if we need to lower the price.

A challenge for me was that I was assigned to make the chip packet keychains and I hadn’t made them before so I had to look on YouTube and I saw some videos and tried them but non of them worked and they looked absolutely terrible. Then I asked my friend who’d done them before and he told me how to do it, I tried his method and they turned out really good.

We used lots of communication because we had to talk a lot over the group chat on our iPads because we weren’t always at school when we had good ideas. We used a lot of collaboration as well because we all had to help each other made our products. We also used resilience when our products didn’t turn out how we wanted it to.

Mia and I sent emails to Mr. Josh Frydenberg to ask if he could attend our Year five market. He said that he’d tell us if he could come when it was closer to the day because he was very busy with the election. Ned asked Kmart to donate a gift card and Grace asked Target to donate toys for prizes.

Someone who’s been working really well in the group is Grace, she has been making her items and posters.

What item would you buy out of our chip packet keychains, painted rocks, stress balls or water colour bookmarks? Leave it in the comments.

Term 1 reflection

This is a blog post of my experience of year 5 term 1. It has gone really fast but I have had a great time and here are some of those:

Highlights:

One of the biggest highlight for probably everyone has been APS. This is our first year doing it because we start it in year 5. We have been doing swimming, biking and rock climbing getting prepared for our swim, bike, run triathlon. In rock climbing I had to use a lot of courage because it pushed me way out of my comfort zone. I tried a lot of very difficult rock climbing walls that I had never done before. When you have pushed through or zoomed through the climbing part and you get to the top the sense of accomplishment feels amazing but then you have to come down which eventually I got used to and really enjoyed bouncing down the walls. In swimming I had to use lots of resilience because my group had to do 12 laps! We had a choice of what stroke we did but I did 9 laps freestyle and 3 very relaxing laps of breaststroke. This was a challenge and at the end I was very tired but it was still very fun. Now for biking, probably my favourite because I really enjoy going through trees, in big groups and on big jumps. I hadn’t ridden a bike for quite a while before this but I really enjoy it now.

Maths. This year we continued maths extension which was really fun. One of the tasks that we had to do was to get these coloured blocks about 27 and put them into a 3x3x3 cube that has no of the same colours on either side so there can’t be two blues on one face or two or more reds on one face. This sounds easy and I thought this too but when you try it it becomes extremely challenging. I had to use lots of persistence to overcome my stress of about an hour of trying but then I got it! I won’t tell you the answer so that maybe you can try. That was only maths extension but in class maths It has been very fun. I have really enjoyed learning how to multiply and divide fractions. I am also very excited because we are starting to learn some Pi in maths to calculate the area of a circle. Impressive right?

New class and teacher. This year I am in 5B and my teacher is mr Benwell. I also have a new class of 26 people. Mr. Benwell is a really great teacher because he explains things very clearly and that makes it easy to understand the task that we are going to be doing. He is also a really good teacher because he makes there like 1.5+ hours of maths a day! Mr. Benwell is also an AFL goal umpire. In my new class we have 10 new kids and 16 previous kids from the school. In total there are actually 39 or 40 new kids in the 104 kids in year 5. It has been really nice to get back playing with my previous friends and make lots of new ones.

What I have learnt:

What I have learnt this term includes a lot of the positive learners attribute out resilience. This is seek discomfort. What this means is push your self out of your comfort zone even if you don’t like it. One of the times that I did this was in the triathlon. I tried my absolute best and ran, swam and rid my bike as fast as possible and by the end I was very tired and a bit sore but I recovered and I was fine after. In the end I got a great result (in my opinion) and was very happy. Everyone can take the easy ways and just go slow and not use much energy (in this situation) but you should always push yourself to your fullest potential.

Goals:

For next term some of goals are to be very confident in Chinese by playing a lot of education perfect. Finish my hunger games book or books and if we do maths Olympiad I want to get about 3 or 4 each time.

I hope you have enjoyed this blog post and have learnt a bit more about my first term in year 5.

Was there a time that you ‘seeked discomfort’? Tell me when.
